What are the costs? What about insurance?

The fee for nutrition counseling is pro-rated at $115/hour, and $80/hour for students. Time spent depends upon the complexity of the condition. The initial session is one and a half hours, with hour to half-hour follow-up sessions. Some insurance companies will cover the cost of nutrition counseling for some diagnoses. If this is a concern, be sure to contact the insurance provider before the appointment. We also offer lower-cost group nutrition therapy at $45/session once the client has received an individualized assessment with the nutritionist.

Group Nutrition Therapy for Adults:

Examples of topics covered in this eight-week group are:

•Learning to eat according to your individualized meal plan starting with basic nutrition to help put you in control over food and weight management.

•Gaining insight into personal dysfunctional thinking patterns that negatively drive your eating behavior and ways to combat them.

•Understanding of eating patterns and nutrient density to help prevent the binge eating cycle as well as avoiding food deprivation.

•Exploring triggers that promote eating disordered behaviors including other “personal hungers” that have nothing to do with physical hunger.

What types of psychological testing are available at
The Body Image Counseling Center?

At the Body Image Counseling Center, we provide specialized assessments of learning disabilities and other psychological concerns for adults and adolescents. Our highly specialized, licensed psychologist offers a number of psychometric assessment batteries for adolescents, adults, and couples. She is experienced in marital assessment, cognitive assessment/learning disability, ADD/ADHD assessment, personality assessment and career assessment.

What is a learning disability?

Learning disabilities are disorders that affect a person’s ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention. Although learning disabilities are usually identified in childhood, adults can also experience learning disabilities that can significantly effect their academic or occupational functioning. Learning disabilities can be lifelong conditions that, in some cases, affect many parts of a person's life: early development, school, work, daily routines, family life, and sometimes even friendships and play. Some children and adults have several overlapping learning disabilities. Other people may have a single, isolated learning problem that has little impact on other areas of their lives.

In adults, learning disabilities are commonly recognized as difficulties in one or more of the following academic areas:

-comprehension
-spelling
-written expression
-problem solving
-math computation
-organizational skills
-time management
-social skills

For either a child or an adult, intervention as early as possible is extremely important when a learning disability is suspected. Appropriate testing and treatment can help to avoid a lifetime of difficulties that may include low self-esteem as well as academic and social problems. Early intervention in the case of a child can significantly enhance his or her school experience.

What are signs that my child may have LD?

Below are some common characteristics of children at risk of having a learning disability:

-Poor coordination and depth-perception
-Distractibility
-Short attention-span
-Impulsivity
-Hyperactivity
-Perseveration (doing the same thing over in the same way)
-Delayed speech
-Limited vocabulary
-Inappropriate use of words
-Difficulty remembering what is heard
-Aversion to being touched or cuddled
-Very low or very high pain-threshold
-Overreaction to noise
-Difficulty following simple directions
-Problems learning to translate printed words into spoken words
-Problems with word identification and/or reading comprehension
-Difficulties perceiving and/or pronouncing words
-Difficulties understanding spoken language
-Trouble recalling known words
-Problems with handwriting
-Spelling difficulties
-Difficulties with mathematics

Thorough assessment can determine whether a child has a learning disability.

Why should I get tested?

Proper testing can help you get the most benefit out of your treatment. It can be used to correctly diagnose problems and to develop effective treatment options.

It can be challenging to assess the exact nature of a psychological concern through traditional “talk therapy” alone. A psychological assessment can assist you and your therapist in gathering an abundance of information about your personal traits, feelings, beliefs, abilities, strengths, general personality and overall level of functioning. Having this information can accelerate the therapy process.

Clients can also use testing as a stand alone service for learning disability or gifted accommodations if appropriate.

If you decide to be evaluated for learning disabilities, you will learn a good deal about yourself. Some of the benefits you can realize from being tested include:

-A detailed account of your areas of weakness and strength.
-Some specific strategies to help you perform more effectively at work, in school, and in everyday life.
-Recommendations for support services, such as counseling, vocational assessment, and job training.
-Recommendations for instructional strategies that will be of most help to you.
-Civil rights protection that ensures your right to accommodations at work and in school. Documentation that will help you be an effective self-advocate.

What Should I Expect/ What is testing like?

There are three steps to the testing process for children and adults:

1. Interview. You or your child will meet with a highly qualified, licensed psychologist who will ask about the learning problems and also want to know about your education, physical and mental health, and family and employment history. You should be honest in providing this information because it will help the evaluator understand your background, strengths and problem areas. If after the interview it is decided that testing should be done, you will need to schedule a series of appointments for testing. Evaluators are required to keep your records and testing information confidential.

2. Evaluation. This step will identify whether you or your child has a learning disability, and will profile areas of strength and weakness. The goal for evaluating adults is different from the goal for evaluating children. Evaluation for children and youth is tied to determining how to best help them in school. Evaluation for adults is more directly related to solving problems in employment, life situations, and academic advancement. The time required for your assessment is dependent on the assessment type needed and instrument(s) selected. The testing can range anywhere from 15 minutes to 8 hours or more of testing conducted over several different appointments. After the type of learning disability is uncovered, the evaluator will provide guidance as to what you should do next.

3. Recommendations. This is the single most important part of the evaluation process. It is when you receive counsel as to what to do with your new learning profile. The evaluation will provide direction for employment, education and daily living, and the psychologist will make specific recommendations for learning strategies that may be the most helpful to you. There will also be recommendations for ways you can compensate for, or work around, the effects of your disability.

You will receive a written report explaining the tests you took and the results. If a learning disability is discovered, it will be documented in the written report that will name specific accommodations for you. Be sure to keep a copy of this report in a place where you can find it easily because you will need it to request accommodations in school or at work. You might want to create a file folder and keep this report along with other information, such as your school Individualized Education Program, medical history, performance evaluations, and letters of reference from employers.

What are my options for payment?

The Body Image Counseling Center offers payment plans and sliding fee scales for those who qualify. You may also wish to check with your insurance company to see if they will cover all or part of the cost of testing and treatment.
